The 2017 Iowa State Fair is in the books and Greene County residents earned several awards and recognitions.
For 4-H’ers, Bailey Anderson received two seals of excellence for her communication exhibits, along with Emily Heupel and Samantha Hardaway who also earned a seal of excellence for their working exhibit. 4-H’ers also had 26 blue ribbons and ten red ribbons for their static exhibits. Greene County Extension Office Coordinator Laura Ballard talks about other 4-H award winners.
“(We had) Emily Heupel for outstanding sewn item; Kyle Hughes for champion halter gelding, in the horse project; Brock Badger for champion berkshire ewe lamb; and Abby Badger for reserve champion charolais market beef and reserve champion berkshire breeding gilt. So we did pick up some really great awards at state fair.”
Jefferson resident Marianne Carlson also won awards in several food competitions. She won five overall competitions and earned about $1,000 in cash and gift card prizes. Twelve-year-old Gretah Johnson of Jefferson was a finalist in the sprout division for the Bill Riley Talent Show. Double D Dexters out of Scranton was the champion and reserve champion steer and Avril and Becca Shahan of Jefferson won the three-year-old most look alike contest.
