This Saturday will be the return of the City of Perry’s annual Public Safety Day.

From 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Hy-Vee parking lot, the public can come out and see vehicles and meet employees from the City’s safety departments. One group that will be in attendance is the public works department. Deputy Director Josh Wuebker says the department has been at Public Safety Day for the last three years, and they use it as a way to entertain and engage the children, as well as educating the adults.

“In the years past, we’ve brought a plow truck there with a blade, and we’ve let kids sign the blade, and draw on it, and whatever you want to do. (We’ll) set up a little table, and we’ll have some candy and some different giveaways and stuff for kids. And just let them look around the equipment, get inside it and see how it is. We also put some price tags on it, so people can realize how much this costs us. All of our equipment, it’s really, really expensive. So to put a price tag on there and let people realize how much this stuff costs. But it’s well needed.”

There is no cost for the event, and in addition to public works, the police department, fire department, parks and recreation, and emergency medical services will be at Public Safety Day. Families can sit in the fire trucks and squad cars, experience the mobile “Smoke House,” and see the Jaws of Life in action. Additionally, the Raccoon Valley Radio Big Red Radio will be broadcasting live from the event. From 10 a.m. – noon, we will give live updates on air, play music, and relay important information.
