Sweet Corn Fest 2017

The 38th annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival kicks off today, though you’ll have to wait until tomorrow if you want the free all-you-can-eat sweet corn.

Today’s festivities include the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn alumni golf tournament at 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., shucking corn at 5:30 p.m., and the Sweet Corn Festival Princess contest at 6 p.m. The Raccoon Valley Radio Big Red Radio will be playing music and relaying announcements during the shucking of the corn event.

Tomorrow is when the festivities will really take off. The 5K fun run will start at 8 a.m., followed by the parade from 9:30 to around 11. Once the parade is over, people can start partaking in the free sweet corn. There’s no limit to the amount you can eat, and the Adel Chamber Partners purchased six-and-a-half tons for the Festival. Other events include rides, tournaments, games, shows, and music. Additionally, the Big Red Radio will return to broadcast live from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. We will give live reports on air, play music, and relay important information.

Adel Chamber board member Macinzie McFarland believes it will be a fun-filled day, but realizes the parking and traffic could be difficult for attendees. However, they have a solution. “One thing we’re wanting to prepare people for is the construction on the roads that’s happening in Adel right now. Parking can be probably a little dicey that day. So you can park actually out at the ADM High School. And from 8-4 p.m., there’ll be a shuttle that’ll drop you right off south of the Wells Fargo Bank.”
