Greene County School Board 7_19The Greene County School Board recently approved additional salary for one of the administrators.

At their regular July meeting, the Board approved a 1.68-percent base salary increase and an additional $1,000 to Middle School Principal Shawn Zanders. Superintendent Tim Christensen talks about the main factor that impacted the Board’s decision for the additional $1,000 on top of Zanders’ salary.

“Middle school building in previous years was 7th and 8th grade and now with the closure of the intermediate (building) it’s going to be 5th-8th, so more responsibility. There’s been some discussion on the Board that potentially a larger increase than the other administrators received due to increased number of students and grade levels.”

He points out an area of concern that was discussed at the School Board meeting.

“Giving people increases if enrollment or whatever goes up, then the dangerous thing is okay if enrollment goes down do you look at decreasing a person’s salary. So that’s just a slippery slope. And if you’re doing it for administrators do you do it for teachers? It’s something that we’ve never really looked at in terms of basing enrollment and equating that with salary.”

Christensen adds that for the August school board meeting, the Board will also discuss giving the Elementary Principal Scott Johnson a $500 raise for adding fourth graders to his building.
