A major Guthrie County road project is completed, but there are some issues with the finished product.

County Engineer Josh Sebern says Henningsen Construction started work to resurface four and one-half miles from Bagley south on County Road P-18 in late May. He describes the issues that motorists were having on that stretch of road.

“It had some pretty severe cross slopes. So like if you’re driving in your car, it feels like you’re slanting off onto the shoulder. And those varied quite a bit, the standard is a two-percent cross slope and this varied anywhere from flat to seven-percent.”

Sebern notes the contractor grinded up the existing asphalt and laid the material back down, and then applied a new layer of asphalt on top. When the project was completed, Sebern says there was some deflection or wheel-rutting in some areas. Sebern is working with the contractor, the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Asphalt Pavement Association of Iowa to resolve the issues.

The $1.2 million project was paid for with farm-to-market funds.
