Perry School Superintendent Clark Wicks introduced new varsity girls basketball coach Chris Morrow to a large group of players and parents last night at the high school commons. Morrow wanted to have the get together immediately so he could meet some of the players and more importantly, get them back in the gym.
“I’m not going to lie, we are really behind compared to everyone else,” stated the 31 year old first time varsity head coach. “Other teams have been in the gym all summer getting stronger and better and improving their skills. We have 15 days to work according to the state so we are going to get everybody back in the gym tomorrow.”
Perry seems to have caught a break in the hiring process as Morrow indicated he was ready to accept a position at Ankeny the day after Perry offered him the job. The hiring process was a quick one as Morrow met with Superintendent Wicks and Activities Director Tom Lipovac Friday and Monday on advice from Perry principal Dan Marburger. Morrow coached Marburger’s daughter Grace on the AAU circuit.
Morrow indicated that he watched about 5 hours of Perry film yesterday and was excited at what he saw.
“We are going to play an up-tempo style of basketball and we will play a man to man defense. If you can’t play solid man to man, then there is no way you will be able to play a zone or some of the pressure defenses throughout the year. We will be a team that is strong on communication and will talk with another. You will see.”
Any girl interested in playing junior high and high school basketball is invited to the Perry gym today at 11:00 for drill work. Morrow indicated the drills will last around an hour.
Raccoon Valley Radio’s Shawn Kenney sat down with Morrow and will feature parts of his interview with the new coach over the next couple of weeks.
