Whiterock Conservancy is asking for volunteers to help clean up the river while enjoying a float down it this weekend.
A volunteer river clean up will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers can float down the river and help clean up litter to prepare for the summer and preserve the natural resource. Conservation Manager Rob Davis says these river clean up efforts are sorely needed to maintain the quality of the river.
“So Iowa rivers for a little while have been treated as a dumping ground and they catch quite a bit of debris from road ditches as well, so what we are looking to do is just a general river cleanup to get garbage and appliances out of the river.”
Volunteers with canoes are asked to bring them along, but Whiterock will have canoes and kayaks available for volunteers to use. Contact Rob Davis at 712-684-2697 to reserve a kayak. The group will meet at the River Campground, 1314 Fig Ave in Coon Rapids and will shuttle upstream. Lunch will be provided at the end of the clean-up.
