Summer tends to bring an influx of two-wheeled vehicles to the roads, whether they’re motorcycles, mopeds, or even bicycles.
With the fragility of those vehicles in mind, officers remind motorists to be aware of them to avoid any tragic accidents. Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard points to one thing in particular as a serious threat to the safety of two-wheeled vehicles. “The biggest thing that comes to mind is that cell phone. You know, you still drive down the road and see all these people on that cell phone and looking down in their lap. Staring at their phone instead of staring at the road. And the amount of mopeds and motorcycles you’re seeing today, I just encourage you to put the phone down and pay attention to your surroundings.”
While the safety of motorcycle, moped, and bicycle riders is largely in the hands of other motorists, officers emphasize those individuals must also take steps to ensure their own safety. Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn explains, “You should wear a helmet. It is always very important to do. If you can, wear gloves, because that will help you in case of a crash or a fall. We just need to be cautious and careful. The people riding those motorcycles and mopeds and bicycles need to take an extra look too.”
