Greene County will continue an outstanding year in the high jump at the 2017 Coed State Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines tomorrow. Freshman Carter Morton and junior Megan Durbin both qualified and both will jump tomorrow, Morton at 2 p.m. and Durbin at 4:30 p.m.

The two jumpers are two years apart in school, but a world of experience separates them, yet, here they both are. Durbin is a decorated veteran jumper, although just a junior. She was the Class 3A State runner-up as a freshman, won both the Drake Relays and 3A State title as a sophomore, and is the 2017 Drake Relays runner-up. Her career best is 5′ 8″ and this year’s season best is 5′ 7″.

Morton is a first year high jumper who finished the regular season with a best of 5′ 10″, which he cleared once. He normally was in the 5′ 6″ or 5′ 8″ range. Last Thursday at the Denison State Qualifying Meet, it all came together for the ninth grader, as he cleared the bar at 6′ 2″ to win by two inches, and he set a personal best by four inches.

Since the early 2000’s, the Rams have had a large contingent of male and female high jumpers at State Meets, and the tradition will continue tomorrow.

The only other event for the Greene County boys is the 4 x 100 meter relay with freshman Colby Kafer and seniors Logan Lansman, Chase Stoline, and Nick Schroeder. Those prelims are Friday evening.

The other girls’ events for the Rams are the 200 meter dash preliminaries on Thursday with senior Olivia Hansen, the long jump on Friday with sophomore Janelle Brophy, and Saturday’s sprint medley relay with freshman Megan Doran, Durbin, sophomore Melanie Doran, and Hansen.
