The Perry City Council met Monday evening in regular session.

A large portion of the meeting was devoted to a discussion on fireworks. Fireworks were recently legalized for sale and use in Iowa, though individual cities have the ability to handle it how they see fit. However, the Council admitted there isn’t enough time to make official ordinances regarding fireworks before they can first start to be sold and used on June 1st. They do plan on having a work session soon to discuss how they want to deal with fireworks in the long term.

Other topics discussed during the meeting included a public hearing regarding an amendment to the 2017 fiscal year budget, and the approval thereof. No one spoke during the public hearing, so the Council unanimously approved the amendment as presented. They also approved resolutions approving a cleaning service agreement with Easy Clean, as well as approving Bolton and Menk as airport consultants.

During the open forum, Jenny Eklund of La Poste talked about the Fiber Art Fair, which everyone agreed was a big success. She gave the Council advance notice that they will be proposing the second annual fair next spring.

Finally, the Council discussed a possible ordinance that would streamline the process to acquire chickens within city limits. The ordinance was drafted by Finance Officer Susie Moorhead based on similar ordinances in other cities of comparable size such as Washington. The Council had concerns with some of the wording in the ordinance, and agreed to hold a work session to discuss it further.
