May is National School Board Appreciation Month, and the Perry School District is taking the time to thank its Board.
Being on a school board isn’t a paid position, though its members are elected by the public. Superintendent Lynn Ubben says the volunteers on the Board do it because they care a great deal about the district and its wellbeing. She also says it’s a much harder job than most people probably realize.
“It is good to celebrate our Board members, because it’s a lot of time and effort. Especially, you know, when you first become a new Board member, because school finance and just the intricacies of a school system are much different than business. And so you really have to be a student and learn before you can make an impact. So it takes a few years. It’s a lot of hard work, but we have a good Board.”
To celebrate the Perry School Board, students have given them a variety of “Thank You” art projects, and the staff and administration have provided them with cookies and other treats.
