At their May meeting, the Perry School Board faced the task of filling the seat vacated with the recent passing of Board Member Marjean Gries.
After some discussion, Gries’s son Casey Baldwin was chosen to succeed his mother on the Board. Board Vice President Jim Lutmer proposed Baldwin, who had expressed interest in the vacant spot. No other candidate was proposed, so the Board unanimously approved his appointment. He will serve the remainder of Gries’s term, which was scheduled to expire this September. At that time, if he desires, he can run for reelection.
Baldwin, a graduate of the Perry School District, has two children currently attending Perry schools. Superintendent Lynn Ubben said Baldwin has a history of supporting the district, and feels he was an excellent choice. “He’ll be a good member of the board, and I think it’ll be good for him to try. Because the election is in September, and sometimes this is kind of a nice way to come on the board and just kind of get your feet wet, and then see if you’re going to have the time to run again. Because it is a four-year commitment right now. So it’s just something he kind of wanted to do, to fill his mom’s position for a few months, and try it out.”
