The deadline to file state and federal income taxes is rapidly approaching.

The last day taxes can be filed with the Internal Revenue Service is Tuesday, April 18th. After that time, taxes can still be filed but the IRS may charge penalties. If people need more time, they can file for an extension, but the deadline to file that is also on the 18th. The last day to file taxes with an extension is October 16th. Penalties tend to apply if a person owes money on their taxes or don’t pay taxes by the tax deadline, and are typically based on the amount owed to the IRS. Generally, penalties aren’t applied for people expecting a refund, even if they don’t file on time.

Traditionally Tax Day is April 15th, but due to the day falling on a Saturday and the Washington, D.C. Emancipation Day holiday being observed on April 17th, the 18th is tax day this year.
