Greene County School Board 3_22Last week, the Greene County School Board voted to deny a request about the school district sponsoring transportation for girls soccer.

Superintendent Tim Christensen says the district has an agreement with the Boone School District to share not only soccer but swimming as well. In that agreement, Greene County Schools wouldn’t provide transportation because it doesn’t incur a cost. The Board previously denied a similar request earlier this school year for the girls swim.

The request on Wednesday was made to the Board about sponsoring transportation for nine girls. They obtained a van from a local church to use as the transportation vehicle with an independent driver. Christensen points out that the church needed liability insurance.

“So they wanted to use the school’s liability insurance in order to cover that. It would’ve been no front cost to the school district, but the school district would’ve been carrying the liability on that if there would’ve been an accident and any of the students would’ve been injured or if that vehicle would have resulted in an accident that would’ve been injuries to someone else.”

Christensen adds that the state requires a maximum of nine people, including the driver, in a van for a school district to transport students to activities and practices.

The Board voted six to one to deny the request. The one “no” vote was board member Steve Fisher.
