A unique skiing and snowboarding event will be held at the Midway Motel in Guthrie Center this month. Organizer Matt Fronapple says the contest, which he calls the Midway Motel Rail Jam, will feature skiers and snowboarders from across the state. A rail jam challenges riders to build up speed while approaching rails and other obstacles, sliding along them and performing tricks, before landing cleanly on the other side. Fronapple grew up in Colorado, and participated in rail jams, but says he hasn’t been able to find any in Iowa outside of the far northeast corner of the state. He encourages people to come out and watch the contest
“Seeing skiers and snowboarders do tricks on these rails is simply amazing.”
Competitors must be 18-years-old to enter and will need to sign a liability waiver. Registration will open at 10:00 the morning of Saturday, February 25 and the contest will start at 2:00 p.m. There is a $10 entry fee that will be used as prize money for the winners.
