Winter has arrived in Iowa and it’s a good time to review some safety tips when there’s severe winter weather.
Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf reminds everyone to drive slow and controlled when there’s blowing snow. If you have to pull over to the side of the road, make sure you use your flashers so that passing vehicles see where you are. Kempf also suggests that if you get stuck somewhere or become stranded on the side of the road, to always stay with your vehicle.
“Unless you can, within 100 yards or so see where it is that you’re walking to, you need to stay with your vehicle. It’s so easy to get disoriented.”
As for blowing snow, Kempf suggests using low beam headlights. He points out that if you use high beam headlights, your vision can be minimized due to the reflection of the snow in front of your vehicle.
