Even though we don’t want to think about it, winter will eventually be here and New Opportunities of Greene County is once again offering the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to qualified individuals.
Coordinator Teresa Lansman says from October 1st through April 30th, anyone ages 60 and older or disabled individuals can take advantage of the federally funded program. Qualified individuals are based on household income levels.
“This is the only program that if you get signed up the electric company will not be able to turn your electricity off during the winter months for gas or heat. The funds go straight to the company, so you don’t have to worry about it. It shows a credit on the bill. I tell many people to keep paying what you can throughout those months.”
All other households can apply for the program starting November 1st. Lansman says you have to call and schedule an appointment to see how much assistance you qualify for. Appointments are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the New Opportunities office in Jefferson at 1401 North Elm Street or call 386-2719.
