Today is Media Day for the Greene County High School football and cross-country squads. Volleyball Media Day is tomorrow.
Kelly Simpson is a veteran cross-country coach for both girls and boys and the number of runners out this season could be an issue. The top girls’ runner, Olivia Hansen, is a senior this year, and last season’s number two runner, Emily Finch, is a junior. Freshman Bailey Cunningham had an outstanding middle school career and she’ll now be moving up to the 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) that high school boys and girls in Iowa now compete at. What kind of depth the Rams have may decide how high the team finishes in meets.
The Greene County boys lacked a true number one runner last season, as well as depth. If those remain as issues, the 2016 season could be another of lower division finishes in meets.
Dean Lansman returns to the Rams as the head football coach after a 4-5 season in 2015. A large senior class graduated including 10 players that received some type of All-District recognition, but several players with varsity experience return including All-District receiver Nick Schroeder, who is also an outstanding kicker.
