The US Senate has approved an autism and alzheimer’s bill named after a Jefferson boy.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Charles Grassley and Senator Charles Schumer collaborated on the bill, Kevin and Avonte’s Law. The legislation was named after two autistic boys died after wandering away from safety. Nine year-old Kevin Curtis Wills had autism, wandered away from his family and jumped into the Raccoon River in 2008 and drowned. In 2014, Avonte Oquendo died in the East River in New York City after he wandered away from school.
The bill aims to reauthorize the Missing Alzheimer’s Disease Patient Alert Program, allow Justice Department grants to be used for state and local education and training to prevent wandering and reunite them with caregivers with missing family members who have been linked to wandering. Grants can also be used to training emergency personnel, first responders, school personnel and the development of tracking programs.
The US Senate unanimously passed the bill.
