20160711_180543_791-300x168The Guthrie Center City Council met Monday night.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the third and final reading of an ordinance which regulates the operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-road vehicles (ORVs) and snowmobiles within the City limits. The ordinance notes that there are no authorized snowmobile trails in the City. However, if registered with the City Clerk’s office and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), ATVs and ORVs can be operated on City streets and alleys, with the exceptions of state highways 25 and 44, for the purposes of snow removal, gardening and lawn work, legitimate business purposes and special events as authorized by the Council.

Recreational usage within the City limits is prohibited by the ordinance and can result in registration being rescinded. All operators of registered ATV’s and ORV’s must be 18 and older and hold a valid driver’s license, or be 16 and older and hold a valid driver’s license and valid DNR ATV education certificate.

Other important aspects of the ordinance include the vehicle being outfitted with the proper safety equipment, and follow parking and hours of operation guidelines.

The ordinance is scheduled to go into effect on Wednesday, July 20th, or once it has been officially published.
