District 12 Senator Amy Sinclair

A major governmental topic in the state of Iowa in the month of April was that of Governor Kim Reynolds choosing to not run for election in 2026.

Senator for District 12 Amy Sinclair says that she was surprised that the governor made the announcement in the middle of the legislative session, but that she also sees why Reynolds wants to step away from the office and spend more time with family. Sinclair tells Raccoon Valley Radio she wasn’t surprised to hear that Iowa Auditor Rob Sand is exploring a bid at candidacy on the Democratic side, and also shares about those who have announced their intentions from the Republican party as well.

“On the Republican side, these are folks that I’ve known and worked with and I think all have different positive things that they bring to the conversation. Former Representative Brad Sherman has thrown his name in the hat. He did that prior to the governor retiring. So, you he was looking at a primary against the governor. I think his position shifts now that it’s actually going to be an open seat for governor as far as the Republican primary goes.”

Sinclair mentions that she also was not surprised that District 21 Senator Mike Bousselot has begun an exploratory committee for a run at candidacy, and that she could see Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird and Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig also stepping into the ring for the position. She adds that at this time, she doesn’t have plans to run for Governor, but that after the current legislative session and over the summer she may do some thinking on the subject.
