With the 2025 Legislative session coming ever closer to its end, bills are making their way through final votes in the chambers and to the governor’s desk.

Representative Ray Sorensen says that there is currently one bill in the Economic Growth and Technology Committee that he chairs that he is working to get on the House floor for a vote. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that Senate File 146 aims to regulate the use of automated software programs when it comes to purchasing event tickets.

“(It) specifically prohibits the use or creation of bots to exceed ticket purchase limits, and they manipulate electronic queues or bypass security measures. The bill would mandate ticket sellers to report violations to the attorney general, who would then be empowered to enforce compliance and impose civil penalties.”

Sorensen mentions that the use of these “ticket bots” creates a scarcity of tickets from viable and reliable sources, and allows the users of the bots to scalp prices, or inflate them to resell tickets at a profit. He adds that the intent of the bill is to allow fair access to events, and allow everyone an opportunity to enjoy them without breaking the bank to do so.
