A bill that recently passed the Iowa Senate and is now in the House for consideration would add a requirement to graduate high school.
If Senate File 369 passes the House and is signed into law, high school seniors would have to pass a civic test before they could graduate. District 24 Senator Jesse Green was the sponsor of the bill and says students should take the same test that immigrants have to take to become US citizens.
“It blows my mind that over 30 percent of kids that graduate don’t even know, ‘Name the three branches of government’ that’s a big problem. And so we need to heighten our standards when it comes to civics.”
Following the Senate passing the legislation over to the House, Governor Kim Reynolds showed her support by posting on the social media platform “x” formerly known as Twitter. The bill passed in the Senate with bipartisan support on a 38-7 vote.
