In mid-March, the United States Congress passed a six-month appropriations bill that averted a partial federal government shutdown.

Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn shares his reaction to the inner politics that the Democratic Party was doing with this bill, but ultimately getting it passed and signed by President Donald Trump.

“Now while I’m glad that Democrats in both the House and the Senate voted for the responsible thing, I’m also disappointed by the number of Senate Democrats who wanted to shutdown the US government so they could protect the fraud, waste and abuse that’s already been identified in the first 60 days of the Trump Administration.”

Nunn highlights some of the main areas that were covered in the spending bill.

“Now what I’m happy with is that one of the things that I’ve always prioritized is making sure that our military gets paid. In fact, we were able to ensure that our enlisted troops, the most junior troops in the armed services, got a pay increase and I think that’s huge. Our border patrol, our TSA agents, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid were all protected, there was not a single cut.”

Nunn adds that the legislation also helped farmers with the predictability they needed to prepare for the planting season, as well as maintaining the federal government at status quo.
