A reminder that tomorrow is a free program that explores a unique area in Greene County.

The Greene County Historical Society and the Friends of the Greene County Parks are sponsoring the program about the Tipton Prairie. Chris Henning, who is a member of the Friends of the Parks, says this area that is near where she lives around Cooper, is one of, if not the best virgin prairies left in the state.

Organizers say Drake University biology professor Thomas Rosburg will be the guest speaker. Rosburg established the Drake Prairie Rescue and Restoration program in 2003, where he has given hands-on experience in prairie ecology for more than 300 students and saved prairies in over 65 sites across Iowa. According to the Historical Society, Rosburg recently conducted a survey of the Tipton Prairie and identified over 180 native plants and is developing a management plan to eliminate the invasive non-native plants without using chemicals.

Tomorrow’s free program begins at 2pm at the Historical Museum in Jefferson.
