
Jefferson’s Carter Morton, a 2020 Greene County High School graduate, won two heptathlon events Friday morning at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at Virginia Beach, Virginia. Morton won the long jump and the high jump and sits in fifth place with the final three events today. The fifth year senior at the U. of Northern Iowa had a best long jump leap of 24 feet, 2-1/2 inches and he finished the day with a victory in the high jump at 6′ 10-1/4″.
Morton started the day with a fourteenth place finish in the 60 meter dash. The long jump was next, then the shot put, followed by Friday’s final event, the high jump. He was twelfth in the shot put at 40′ 7-1/2″ and he completed day one with the high jump victory.
The day one leader with 3,357 points is Peyton Bair of Mississippi State.
Day two starts with the 60 meter hurdles, followed by the pole vault. The seventh and final event is the 1,000 meter run. The top eight finishers overall earn medals as All-Americans.
Carter is the son of Chad and Deb Morton of Jefferson.
