Carter Morton after clearing 6' 11" in the high jump outdoors in 2023

The NCAA Division I indoor track & field meet gets underway this morning in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Carter Morton of Jefferson, a 2020 Greene County graduate and fifth year senior at the University of Northern Iowa, will be among the first participants. Morton qualified tenth among the 16 athletes vying for All-American honors in the seven event heptathlon starting at 8:15 a.m. Iowa time.  The 60 meter dash, long jump, shot put, and high jump are today. Tomorrow, the last three events are the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000 meter run.

Athletes score points in each event and at the end of the seventh event, the high score wins. Morton was a high hurdler and high jumper in high school, but the other events were brand new to him when he went to UNI.

Chad and Deb Morton of Jefferson are Carter’s parents, and Chad is also the Greene County High School boys’ head track and field coach.
