Only the top 16 Heptathletes from the more than 300 NCAA Division I colleges and Universities in the United States qualify for the Indoor Championships. That’s a minute number when compared to the number of athletes throughout the country that take part in the seven event heptathlon.

Fifth year senior Carter Morton from Jefferson and the University of Northern Iowa has defied the odds and he’ll be competing Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Meet. The Heptathlon has four events on Friday and three on Saturday. Events include the shot put, 60 meter hurdles, 60 meter dash, pole vault, long jump, high jump, and 1,000 meter run. Morton enters the competition with the tenth highest score from the regular season at 5,807 points. He is the son of Chad and Deb Morton of Jefferson.
