The Iowa High School Athletic Association on Friday released football classifications for the 2025 and ’26 seasons. Only the sport of football uses a formula for free and reduced lunch percentages as well as school enrollments to determine final classification numbers. After playing the last six seasons in Class 2A, Greene County moves up a class to 3A for the next two seasons.

Since Greene County and Paton-Churdan share the sport of football, enrollment figures for both districts, as well as free and reduced percentages for both are taken into consideration. The Rams have the third smallest 3A number at 277.05, ahead of only Charles City (275.10) and Iowa Falls-Alden (267.91). The largest 2A football program is West Burlington at 261.56 students.

Iowa high school football has seven classes with the largest 36 schools in 5A, followed by the next 36 largeset in 4A, and the next 36 in 3A. Among the differences from 3A to 2A football is nine regular season games in 3A compared to eight for 2A programs. Also, there are six 3A districts with 16 playoff qualifiers. Class 2A has 48 in it with 32 playoff qualifiers. Playoff qualifying methods are also different between classes 3A and 2A.
