The Guthrie Center City Council met in regular session Monday night.

The Council approved the second reading of an ordinance adjusting the speed limits on School and Bluff Streets, then waived the third and final reading of the ordinance, formally adopting it into City Code. They also appointed Alan Mahaffey, Kari Carroll, Dana Stein and Megan Railsback as the new 2025 Aquatic Center Committee members, and set a public hearing for the fiscal year 2025-26 property tax levy for 6:30pm on March 24th at Guthrie Center City Hall.

The Council then approved the Mary J Barnett Memorial Library Board budget as presented, with corrected proposed insurance expense, Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) and Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS) calculations, and a salary increase of 75 cents for fiscal year 2025-26 instead of the proposed $1.50. City Clerk Kris Arrasmith shared the preliminary budget figures she has calculated so far for fiscal year 2025-26, cautioning that recent actions in the state legislature over the last couple years directly impact tax revenues for the city, with a cycle of “doing more with less” to be coming.
