Following the Sub-District contest this past Monday, the Greene County FFA Chapter performed well as they get ready to host the District contest later this week.
Greene County FFA Advisor Raelyn Harris says there were two Gold Awards and those went to middle schooler Jaelynn Hedges for Ag Broadcasting and freshman Hanna Fouch for Creed Speaking. Fouch tells Raccoon Valley Radio that Creed Speaking was reciting a memorized speech based on the FFA Creed and then judges asked questions about it. She explains that Harris had signed her up for Creed Speaking when she was in middle school because Harris knew that she didn’t mind speaking in public and the event was for only high school freshmen.
Fouch illustrates that even though it was sometimes stressful to have the Sub-District contest pushed back twice due to winter weather, she had a positive experience overall at her first competitive event for FFA.
“It was really fun because I’ve gone to National Convention, I’ve gone to State Convention, and this is a lot smaller but it was still really, really fun, I really enjoyed it. My judges were so nice, they like told me what I did good. I really enjoyed it.”
Other FFA’ers that did well at Sub-Districts includes Eli Glawe that had a Silver Award and was an alternate for Districts in Ag Sales and the Conduct of Meeting team received a Silver Award and was also an alternate for Districts.
As the Greene County Chapter prepares to host the District contest for the first time at the new high school, Harris says it has been a major undertaking. She appreciates all of the volunteers, including 40 students and the 50 judges who are traveling from across the state to be in Jefferson on Saturday. Harris expresses her gratitude to all entities who have made donations, including the Greene County Booster Club, Coca-Cola in Atlantic, Greene County Pork Producers and the Greene County Cattlemen’s Association, Home State Bank and some of the parents who are helping with the concession stand.
