The AC/GC Chargers boys basketball team secured their next game in the postseason, but the win was extra sweet Monday night.
The Chargers hosted the Exira-EHK Spartans for the first round of the 2024-25 Sub-District Bracket, and led the Spartans 19-10 at the end of the first. The team opened things up in the second quarter, going into halftime up 36-14. Both teams shot well in the third quarter, and the score going into the final eight minutes was 66-34 in favor of the Chargers. With roughly five and a half minutes left in the game, the Chargers bench players took the court, and the game was won 78-45.
The win was extra special for the team though, as it was the 100th career win for Head Coach Lance Kading, who in the postgame interview said while it was special to be able to reach the milestone, what he and the guys on the team are shooting for is 106 wins, which would include this year’s state title.
The Crafty’s Coffee and Gifts Player of the Game was the big man in the paint, Mason Wahl, who started the Chargers offensive at the beginning of the game by scoring the first six points, and ending the night with 13. The Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game was one that involved several Chargers, but started on the floor with Payton Policky, who was knocked down going for a loose ball. Policky corralled the ball, got the pass off to Noah Kading on the right post, and Kading realized Wahl was open on the left side, dishing to the 6’6” senior for the score, putting Wahl in double digits on the night.
The Chargers boys next game will be Thursday, when they host the Audubon Wheelers. The Chargers girls basketball team begins their postseason push tonight, as they host the Earlham Cardinals in first round action, with tipoff set for 7pm.
