A crash in Guthrie Center over the weekend is suspected to have occurred after a chase.
On February 15th at 10:29pm, Guthrie County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a report from an automated iPhone message of a severe crash in the 300 block of South 1st Street in Guthrie Center. Once deputies arrived on scene, about 10:50pm, a 2014 Nissan Rogue driven by Hilario Ramos was found facing west with the front of the vehicle firmly against a concrete barrier. One deputy knocked on the window, awakening the unconscious driver, and was able to help him out of the vehicle and into the front seat of his patrol vehicle while the second deputy began taking pictures of the scene.
The deputy taking pictures noticed tracks leading a short distance to the west, and it appeared that the vehicle that made them was rear wheel drive and then sped away to the north and east. The deputy deduced this from snow having been thrown into the tracks leading away from the scene, and partially covered the skid marks from the Nissan. The deputy who had been taking pictures then spoke with Ramos, and asked if he had been chased, to which he confirmed. Ramos was then transported to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines by Panora Emergency Medical Services.
Through the investigation by the two deputies, it was determined that the Nissan had been traveling southbound on South 1st Street at a high rate of speed, trying to evade the second vehicle. The Nissan lost traction as South 1st Street curved east at a private entrance for Concrete Supply, at which time it slid sideways before striking a concrete barrier on the passenger side. The rear end of the vehicle spun around, placing the front firmly against the barrier. The second vehicle pulled up to the Nissan, before reversing and speeding away.
Deputies determined through their investigation that Juan Trevino had been operating his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, chasing Ramos. A deputy spoke with Trevino at his residence in Coon Rapids at 12:38am on Sunday, February 16th, where Trevino admitted to chasing Ramos, seeing his vehicle strike the concrete barrier, then leaving. Trevino also admitted he left his vehicle and saw Ramos unconscious before leaving. Trevino made no effort to contact the sheriff’s office at any point during the investigation to report the incident. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring more information as it becomes official.
