Lawmakers in the 2024 Iowa Legislative Session delivered a bill regarding school attendance which was signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds.
House Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that while legislators were trying to help schools be able to make sure students are learning and being taught properly, there were some unexpected consequences and setbacks with the bill, which are being worked on now that the 2025 Legislative Session is going on.
“I know the House Education Committee is working on adjustments and they’re working to ensure that students are accountable while giving schools flexibility they need.”
Sorensen says that many of the issues pertained to truancy and absenteeism. He adds that the Education Committee is working hard to bring a balance between keeping students in school, while also allowing for reasonable accommodations when necessary.
