Several Greene County 4-H’ers are at the Iowa Beef Expo today competing in livestock judging.

Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says one junior 4-H team, and four individuals are competing today. The junior team includes Jaelyn and Jentry Hedges, Jerzee McDonald, and Stella Lautner, and the two junior 4-H individuals are Briella McDonald and Maddie Carstens. Finally, Hardaway says two senior 4-H’ers are also there, and those are Paisley Lautner and Chloe Julick.

Hardaway says because most of the livestock judging contests are on the weekends, sometimes she can only take individuals, because there needs to be four people to make a team. She explains that there are more individuals than usual at today’s contest from Greene County.

“Just because of where they’re learning at. We have some kids that are doing ‘reasons’ which is really tough. When you go to a (livestock) show and you hear the judge placing a class, that’s what these kids are expected to do. So we have some kids that are working at that higher level, and so didn’t feel comfortable bringing them back down to ‘questions.’ So they’re going to be competing as individuals, but they’ll also get a team score for those kids that have a total of four members on their team.”

Hardaway wishes the 4-H’ers the best of luck and is looking forward to seeing some high marks from the girls.
