After performing well at District Large Group Speech Contest on January 25th, multiple groups from Adair – Casey / Guthrie Center advanced to compete at the State Contest February 8th.

Speech Coach Kelsey Dinkla says that of the 14 entries from AC/GC, 10 of them are heading to Waukee High School, with a one act play, ensemble acting and radio broadcast group going, along with two musical theater, two group improv and three group mime entries advancing as well. AC/GC student Blakely Buttler tells Raccoon Valley Radio about what a one act entry entails.

“One act is the length of one act of a full play. So it’s about 30 minutes long, and you kind of have to try and convey the whole script and story. And you can have as many props and costumes as you want. It’s a very elaborate production for most speech groups.”

Carter Dinkla shares why he’s excited to advance to the State Contest.

“Just performing and seeing a bunch of good groups there, being able to perform with people who make it past districts and we know they’re really good. And it just challenges us to be even better.”

Dinkla also shared that the musical theater group he is part of is performing “Godspell,” a take on the musical of the same name specifically for the shortened musical theater format.
