A federal lawmaker from Iowa has introduced legislation that he claims would put an end to some of the unscrupulous practices in Washington, D.C.
Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn says the bipartisan No Corruption in Government Act would prevent stock trading while members of Congress are serving in the legislature, triple the lobbying ban for congressional members and end automatic annual pay raises, which for this year is set at the maximum allowable under current law of 3.8 percent for US Representatives.
“So this stops the automatic pay raise and it forces members of Congress that if they want to get $6,000 more in pay, then they need to vote for it and they need to be held accountable for it. And they can’t try and flip it in the back door of some other bill. I want it to be very clear that there are no automatic pay raises for members of Congress.”
Nunn points out another bill that he is co-leading is the Back to Work Act that requires federal employees to do at least 60 percent of their job from their offices.
“We’re making sure that bureaucrats, some of them in some departments, they have 91 percent-plus absenteeism for work. We’re asking them, they have to show up for work to get paid for their cost of living allowance and make sure that more folks like Iowans, farmers who show up in the fields, teachers who show up in class, firefighters and law enforcement who show up for work, we expect our federal employees to do the same thing and be there when Iowans need them.”
