District 24 Senator Jesse Green
The 91st Iowa General Assembly started with a Republican supermajority in both the House and Senate.
Sources say this is the third consecutive year that the Republican Party has had a supermajority in the Senate, or at least two-thirds of the senators are with the controlling political party. District 24 Senator Jesse Green (R-Boone) talks about what the main advantage is to having a supermajority for the Senate Republicans.
“The governor appointee positions. We have to have two-thirds of the Senate in order to approve governor appointees. And so now that we have 35 (out of 50 senators that are Republican) senators, that makes it that much easier to get the votes that we need.”
Green adds that having more Republicans in the Senate allows for more opinions and ideas within their own caucus about bills and legislation throughout the session.
