For the first time, high school-age teens will be able to participate in a new winter program at the Jefferson Public Library.

Youth Services Librarian Bailey Mount says this is the first year of the Winter Reading Challenge and the theme is “Battle of the Ban,” which will focus on music and bands as an overarching themes, along with subject matters that spotlights different periods of time, movements or cultures that were banned. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio there are 36 books that have been selected for the 9th through 12th graders to read, with a minimum of ten to be done by March 19th. Mount reveals the details behind the quality of books that are included.

“These books are award winning, they’re books that have been voted in by teens, they’re books with multiple accolades, they’re books that go into a set theme. And the teens are encouraged to either sign up by themselves and read all the books or, in my opinion, a little bit more manageable, sign up in like a group of four or five and tackle all the books together, and get them finished by a certain point.”
