Today is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and for the local deputies and officers in Greene County they play important roles.
Greene County Board of Supervisors Chair John Muir knows that the Greene County Sheriff’s Office is a top notch team.
“The problems coming from the law enforcement, Sheriff’s Office, are no problems that concern the safety of our people. And that’s what I see is the best thing about our law enforcement is they take care of the problems, situations are handled, and for most of us in the public, we never know it.”
Jefferson Mayor Craig Berry is excited for how well the police department is progressing, with seven of eight officer slots filled and he commends the officers who are still with the department, even when the numbers were down as low as five, including the police chief. He explains the main reason why the police department struggles to keep steady numbers.
“We’re always in competition, money wise, with other departments, whether it’s county government or other communities of what we pay our officers. Of course we can only pay them so much money, we’ve only got so much money to pay them. But they seem to like it here. We’ve got officers that are staying and it’s turning into a great department.”
Berry adds that there have been some quality applications that have been coming in to possibly fill that eighth position soon.
