The Saydel (Des Moines) basketball teams visited Jefferson last night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball with the Eagles sweeping the Rams. The girls’ final was 51-5 and the boys’ contest was tied 25-25 at halftime before the Eagles dominated the second half for a 68-40 road win. Both varsity games were heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

The Rams had a three-point basket with five seconds left in the first quarter from junior Kaycee Pittman and a two-point bucket in the final period from sophomore Makenna Ebersole, and that was it. Unofficially, the Rams had 37 turnovers, 32 more than points scored. The Eagles were led in scoring by junior Luella Weisphenning with 20 points and senior Paige Rummans at 14. The Rams are 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the conference while the Eagles improved to 5-4, 3-4.

A 43-15 second half carried the Eagles to their third win of the season. Coach Nic Noring’s team is now 3-5 on the season and 2-5 in the HOIAC. The Rams are 0-5 in the  league and 2-6 overall. Junior Gage Moreno scored 21 for Saydel with 19 by sophomore Brady Hicks, and 16 from senior Adam Mein. Junior Broc Stream scored 11 points to lead Greene County. The Rams led 23-12 early in quarter number two, then were out scored 56-17 the rest of the way.

Class 3A top five ranked Roland-Story visits Jefferson today at 1 p.m. in a varsity girls make up game from Dec. 20. The action can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
