With the one year anniversary of the shooting that happened at Perry High School, Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh believes that the healing process is going well.

Cavanaugh tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he is happy to see the resiliency from residents in the community that are still dealing with the aftermath of the shooting that took place a year ago. He understands that the one year mark tomorrow will likely reopen wounds and bring back some unpleasant memories. Cavanaugh is hoping that people will continue to heal as time goes on.

“And then we’re hopeful (that when) we get past this anniversary, then that’s one step closer to healing. There are going to be some additional counseling (services) available for the students and staff at the schools. So, again hopefully one step closer to healing on that.”

Cavanaugh describes that the Perry Ministerial Association will be hosting a community service of Hope and Healing tomorrow afternoon at 1pm at the former Ben Franklin Building, 1221 2nd Street, in Perry. He realizes that everyone heals on their timeframe, and emphasizes that people should do whatever they need to in order to cope with their emotions.
