The Sierra Community Theatre in Jefferson is going to party like it’s the 1880s with a special event.

Manager Sarah Nicholoson says on Tuesday is the “Christmas Tales,” a celebration of the 140th anniversary of the theater. She says the Town and Country Band will perform holiday music when the doors open at 6:30pm until the program begins at 7pm. Nicholson points out the main portion of the program will be holiday stories told from icons of the late 1800s to early 1900s as a way to bring in that historical aspect of the time period when the building was first opened.

“The history of the theater has always been about reinvention and we just thought, ‘Okay, we’re not embracing that enough, how do we do that?’ Through a bunch of history research that we’ve been doing periodically we figured out that the actual, like birthday, like the day that they crescent the building sort of speak was December 17th (1884).”

Nicholson notes from there the idea came about to do this event. She explains that there are other community partnerships that are making this event possible with Deal’s Orchard, Chirp Coffee, the Jefferson Public Library, Greene County Historical Society and Roadside Relics. She talks about the importance of the theater having partnerships with community businesses and organizations, with this event highlighting the most supporters at one time with six.

“Community support and involvement is always tremendously important to us, it always has been, even back when we were a for profit business, but as a non-profit business it’s absolutely essential. That we pair up, and communicate with, and get involved with other groups in the community. So we’re really excited about that.”

Tickets are $10 and can only be purchased in person at the theater, as Nicholoson encourages getting tickets in advance.
