Randy Hartley was given the Outstanding Service Award at the 2024 Sullivan Brothers Award of Valor and Governor’s Lifesaving Awards ceremony on Wednesday. The event was held at the Iowa Capitol rotunda in Des Moines and honored four individuals, including Hartley.
According to a press release from the Iowa DPS, the outstanding service award is given to an individual who performed a courageous act in an emergency situation. The release states that Hartley was working at the Veterans Reception Center in Van Meter on October 27th, 2023 when he observed a co-worker crying for help in the parking lot. He noticed that her eyes were dilated prompting him to call for help and stood by her side until medical personnel arrived.
The release claims that Hartley told medical staff that he believed that she was suffering from a brain bleed. While she was in the hospital, Hartley stayed in contact with her and offered support. The release clarifies that neurologists were thankful for the quick actions from Hartley to save her life.
Public Safety Strategic Communications Bureau Chief Tawny Kruse tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she is proud of Hartley’s selfless character and truly deserves the award this year. Other awards handed out during the ceremony were for lifesaving service, lifesaving with valor, and meritorious service. The department recognized six other individuals alongside Hartley.
