The AC/GC Chargers basketball teams hosted the Woodward-Granger Hawks and came away with a pair of big wins.

The girls team started things off slowly, with neither team scoring for a bit, before junior Becca Littler opened things up for the Chargers with a corner three pointer, and by the end of the first the team was up 12-8 on the Hawks. AC/GC put up another 12 points in the second while holding Woodward-Granger to five, and went into halftime up 24-13. The second half started similarly to the first, with strong defensive showings from both teams, but the Chargers added an invigorated offense to go into the final quarter up 42-18. Both teams got in the double digits for the fourth quarter, and the Chargers ended the game with the 56-28 victory.

Littler was all over the place for the Chargers, putting up eight points and crashing the boards for nine rebounds on the night, earning her the Crafty’s Coffee Player of the Game nomination. Fellow junior Camdyn Richter was able to work in the paint, putting up 16 points on the night, with sophomore Stella Largent putting up 12 of her own. Junior Karli Kautzky had a couple of good baskets down low as well, a guard among the proverbial trees.

The boys team also got a slow start to the game, thanks to facing off against the Hawks’s unfamiliar two-three zone defense, and finished the first quarter down 16-13. The second quarter started off better as the team settled in though, and they went on an 11 point scoring streak to get going, before heading into halftime up 42-30. Senior guard Jathan South led the scoring at half with 17 points, and didn’t apply the brakes there. In the third quarter, the Chargers outscored the Hawks once again, and went up 67-47, with the start of the end coming off a quick pass from senior Noah Kading to South for a nice step up three pointer. AC/GC then put up another 21 points to Woodward-Granger’s 10 in the final quarter, and finished the game with the 88-57 victory.

South finished the night off with 36 points, able to find a hot hand after the Chargers forced the Hawks to switch from their zone defense to a man defense. Fellow senior Payton Policky led the team on the boards, hauling down 15 off the glass, and was able to get several second chance points for the team. South’s performance on the night earned him the Crafty’s Coffee Player of the Game distinction. Both teams return to action Tuesday night, as they host the Van Meter Bulldogs.
