Greene County begins official practice today in the boys’ sports of basketball and wrestling. Practice began last week for girls’ basketball and bowling for girls and boys.
Chris Nelson starts his ninth season leading the boys’ basketball program at Greene County. Winning seasons have been tough to come by for the Rams in recent years. Graduation hit Greene County fairly hard last season, but there is some varsity experience returning. Senior Isaac Carman would seem to have the most varsity minutes under his belt entering this season.
Kirk Davis is back as the head wrestling coach. He no longer teaches at Greene County, but returned this school year to Coon Rapids-Bayard, where he taught and coached several years ago. The Rams had a winning dual meet season in 2023-24 and upper division finish in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference meet, and in a Class 2A District Tournament. 2024 graduate Gavin Scheuermann placed sixth in the State Tournament while State qualifiers Brent Dennhardt, Degan Miller, and Gavyn Winters were all underclassmen last season.
