DOT informational meeting in Jefferson in September

A proposed project from the Iowa Department of Transportation in the city of Jefferson will be back in front of city officials soon.

City Administrator Scott Peterson says the DOT presented a possible project to convert Iowa Highway 4 from four lanes to three lanes, with a middle turn lane that would run throughout the town. Following a public informational meeting in which over 100 people attended and most submitted comments to the DOT, Peterson points out that DOT staff will be making a presentation using the feedback from the community.

Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio the DOT is expected to be at the Jefferson Street Committee meeting that is scheduled for this coming Tuesday. He explains what could happen at that meeting.

“From there, expect that there would be a recommendation from the street committee about whether to consider proceeding with the project or not. And even if the recommendation comes back and they would recommend that we would not proceed, I do want to get this to the city council level, and it’s more about just making sure that the public knows that an action has been made, and a decision has been made whether to proceed or not. So even if the decision would recommend not (to move forward) it would still come to the council.”

Peterson adds the final decision by the city council would most likely occur in November. He invites anyone from the public to attend the Tuesday street committee meeting that is at 8am in the City Hall Council Chambers.
