As fall progresses and winter gets closer, some families may need help with keeping their pantries and refrigerators stocked.

New Opportunities of Guthrie County Family Development Coordinator Rhonda Huggins also helps run the Guthrie County Food Pantry in Guthrie Center, which is open to Guthrie County residents that need assistance. She mentions that the food pantry is very busy now, and tells Raccoon Valley Radio some of the items that they could really use.

“Canned beans. We can’t always get canned beans at the Food Bank (of Iowa), so that’s kind of a nice item to have. We’ll always take farm eggs, because we never know if we can get eggs from the Food Bank or not. So if people have extra farm eggs that they want to donate, we will take those.”

Huggins explains that at this time, they’ll accept anything that people are willing to donate, especially non-perishable items like canned goods, breakfast cereals and other things that have a long shelf life. She adds that they are also able to accept donations of meat products through Guthrie County Quality Meats, so if people would like to donate that way it is greatly appreciated as well.
