Coach Caden Duncan’s Greene County High School football team was a 10-7 Class 2A District 8 winner on Friday night over Southeast Valley in Gowrie. The game was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

The Rams lone touchdown came on their first possession, a six play, 79 yard drive. Senior quarterback Crew Conner ran 41 yards for the score and after a dead ball unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, junior kicker Teagan Chisholm booted a 35 yard extra point. The lead stayed 7-0 until the third quarter when Chisholm booted a career best 37 yard field goal in the third quarter for a 10-0 lead. The Jaguars scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter on an 11 yard pass from senior Cael Vansickle to sophomore Logan Jaeschke with the extra point making it a three point game.

The Rams had chances to put the game away without much drama, but penalties, dropped passes, and the SEV offense picking up a third and 25, and fourth and 10 made the closing minutes tense. The Jaguars drove to the Greene County 14 yard line with 14 seconds left and no timeouts left on third down and three. A quarterback sack with the clock running put the pressure on the Jaguars to get back to the line of scrimmage and set before time ran out. A discussion between officials to determine if a flag came with any time left on the clock ended with 0:00 remaining, and a win for the Rams. The road win was the second of the season and the third win overall vs. four losses. In the district the Rams are 2-2 with top 10 ranked Des Moines Christian remaining Oct. 18 in Jefferson to end the regular season. SEV is 1-3 in the district and 3-4 overall. The win basically means the Rams will be in the 2A playoffs on Oct. 25.

The Rams had 171 total yards of offense with 112 passing and 59 on the ground. SEV out gained the Rams by 100 yards with 215 through the air and 56 rushing. Conner went 9-15-0 passing and Nicholas Stream led the running game with 53 yards on 15 carries. Stream has also the leading receiver for the Rams with 22 yards on four catches. SEV quarterback Vansickle was 16-30-2 for 215 yards and the one TD. Ram sophomore Trevon Keely intercepted Vansickle twice after he entered the game with just three passes picked off in the first six games.

Friday, Oct. 18 is the regular season finale for the Rams,. They’ll be at home at Linduska Field in Jefferson for the final 2A District 8 contest vs. Des Moines Christian. The Lions were ranked number 10 in 2A before a 28-21 loss on Friday night at R-S. Former All-State lineman for the Rams, John Michael Sawhill, is the defensive coordinator for the Lions. The game kicks off at 7 pm. and can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
