With the fall season and as leaves on trees turn their different colors, they will also eventually fall off which can create a mess.

Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan advises residents if they do rake up leaves to not dispose of them onto the city streets.

“Our crews will be out here very shortly and it takes us six to eight weeks to (street) sweep everyday to pick up all of the leaves that fall out of the trees. And typically we’ll have to chase that sweeper with two dump trucks to haul those leaves off so that sweeper can keep going. So they’re busy enough. Let’s not give them anymore to do.”

Morlan recommends to either place raked leaves into biodegradable bags that will be picked up with yard waste for a few more weeks, or residents can also take leaves anytime of the year to the city’s yard waste dump site at Daubendiek Park. As a reminder, Greene County is currently under a burn ban, which means the city’s ordinance that would allow for open burning of yard waste will not be permitted while the burn ban remains in effect.
